Happy New Year! Blah blah blah.
I’m afraid it’s going to be a unhappy year in Ukraine. As Putin’s World author and Brookings analyst Angela Stent explained to me, it’s hard to find any glimmers of peace. Vladimir Putin still holds all the cards. Or at least he seems to hold all the cards that count. And the invasion won’t end until Putin is either removed from power or clearly wins or loses the war. Stent didn’t appear entirely hopeless. But it’s hard to find much good cheer in her hardheaded take on the war.
