Your Data Will Now Be Used Against You

Episode 2794: Andrew Guthrie Ferguson on Policing in the Age of Self-Surveillance

"Twenty years ago, the internet was all about empowering us. In fact, back in 2006, at the height of the Web 2.0 exuberance, Time even awarded their Person of the Year to YOU. Today, however, the zeitgeist has been turned on its head and now most of us see the digital realm as a threat to YOU. The George Washington University Law Professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson certainly does — and in his new book, Your Data Will Be Used Against You, he warns about the way that the police are weaponizing the self-surveillance data from our smartphones. 'Every smart device you own is a surveillance device,' Ferguson warns about a panoptical future in which everything YOU do is being tracked by both Silicon Valley behemoths and the police."
